3 Stars 2017 Week 38

  1. Ed Rush NBA Basketball Referee
  2. Sean Raphael Hockey Referee
  3. Flying Ball Delivery

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 37 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

The Flying Ball Delivery at the Portuguese Cup earlier this year is a popular post. At least by the 101 standards anyways. šŸ™‚ I was heavily influenced in this selection by the followers on Twitter. It is a repost from a few months ago so I was a bit surprised to see it get a few retweets although I suppose I shouldn’t have been. It was one of my personal favourite posts so why not? It is an interesting peak at future possibilities. I suggest a look at my own vision of the game of Quidditch in the years to come, but why not football? Soaring above the play would certainly provide an enhanced view of the field for the referees. Soccer, rugby, fieldhockey are all sports that could benefit from a higher perspective for the officials. The Flying Ball Delivery guy on a drone gets 3rd Star for this week.

2nd Star

Sean Raphael is a Hockey Referee in my home province of British Columbia in Canada. He is also the boss of the BC Hockey Referees and he was talking to the RIC’s (Referees in Chief) of Okanagan hockey in Salmon Arm last weekend. I attended that meeting to hear him speak and learn what I could from him while he was in Salmon Arm. That pile of hair at the front of the photo is the back of my head. We talked a lot about recruiting, training and retaining referees. Sean Raphael, Hockey Referee, did a great job trying to teach me and others to guide the future officials of the game, and is 2nd Star for this week.

1st Star

Ed Rush Sr. is a Basketball Referee. He spent over 35 years with the NBA and is a wealth of knowledge regarding all things basketball. Senior Rush is very active teaching and sharing his experiences with all levels of the game. His energy and willingness to give back to the game is kind of a special thing to watch in the business of sports officials, and I think that basketball referees should do everything they can to get some time with the man. Junior Rush shares his love, respect and admiration for his Dad in this post. Ed Rush Sr., Basketball Referee, is 1st Star for Week 38.

3 Stars 2017 Week 37

  1. Karl Dickson Rugby Referee
  2. Steve Woods NFL Football Umpire
  3. The Unknown Umpire

3rd Star

Looking at this picture of a Baseball Umpire talking to a very young lady player is like holding a purring kitten. I am always on the lookout for ‘feel good’ type posts and this one gives it up in spades. For all the glamour and excitement of professional sports, and the grit and grind of those who are trying to get there, this photo reminds us of the simple joy of the game. Never forget where you came from and treasure all the small moments of the journey. The Unknown Umpire gets 3rd Star this week

2nd Star

Steve Woods is now an NFL Football Umpiree after making his debut in the Broncos and Chargers game the other night. This post shows that there are rookies at every level of officiating. It is important that young referees and umpires believe in themselves and trust in their training and know that being a rookie is an experience that will be felt over and over again as they climb the ranks of their sport. Even when they reach the pinnacle of their game. Steve Woods, Rookie NFL Football Umpire, is 2nd Star.

1st Star

Karl Dickson is a Rugby Referee. He is a former professional player before he took to the whistle a few years ago. Dickson has changed his perspective about officiating and the level of fitness that is required to do the job. I find it interesting to watch players in their transition to becoming an official. Their view of the game is different and they see a whole new world open up for themselves. It becomes a challenge for some of them that gives a similar thrill as playing. It is different of course, but similar. Anyways, I always find it interesting to watch their journey and hear their insights. Karl Dickson is 1st Star for Week 37.

3 Stars 2017 Week 36

  1. Bibiana Steinhaus Football Referee
  2. Jennifer Huggins Boxing Referee
  3. Nigel Owens Rugby Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 36 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

Nigel Owens is probably one of the most famous referees in the world today. For many years the rugby world has chosen Owens to take charge of its most important matches. His exchanges with players have been legendary. The sport of rugby has a reputation for sportsmanship and honour, at least at the elite levels, and when you see a match with Nigel Owens in the middle, you understand the meaning of the word respect in sport. Most of his focus these days has been on the speaker circuit where he is in huge demand. He speaks to audiences that include everyone from the ‘rich and famous’ to the ‘you and me’. I have never seen him myself, but from what I see in my searches, he is absolutely hilarious. Like this television advert. I thought it was funny. That wins. Nigel Owens, Rugby Referee, is 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Jennifer Huggins is a Boxing Referee, and well known to the Officials101 Twitter audience. Huggins is Canada’s top Boxing Referee, at the moment, and she is a whole lot more. A very successful entrepreneur, with a gym in Toronto, her charity work is also amazing and widespread. The Fight To End Cancer fundraiser that she created and operates has raised millions, but she also does a thousand little things behind the scenes that people don’t see. It is quite inspiring. It is an honour that Huggins takes a moment from her busy schedule and shares her insights with the 101 Twitter feed. This week, she sent us 3 great posts. You can decide which one you like most. I put them all together and Jennifer Huggins, Boxing Referee, is 2nd Star for the week.

1st Star

Bibiana Steinhaus is a #Football #Referee in Germany. She might be the most recognizable of the worlds’ female soccer referees. Steinhaus has been in the middle for a number of high profile international matches in women’s football she is cuurently grabbing more attention for her work in men’s football in Germany. This week, Steinhaus will become the first female referee to ever appear in a Bundesliga match and that is pretty big news. Bibiana Steinhaus, Football Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 35.

3 Stars 2017 Week 35

  1. Alhambra Nievas Rugby Referee
  2. Sarah Seiber Taekwondo Referee
  3. Aimee Barret-Theron Rugby Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 35 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

The 3rd Star this week goes to Aimee Barrett-Theron, Rugby Referee. A former star player, Barrett-Theron has taken her career as a referee to incredible heights in a short period of time. Elite level rugby referees are some of the very best sports officials in the world and the rise of Aimee Barrett-Theron to their ranks so quickly is something worth noticing. Here, she talks about her Women’s World Cup experience and the honour of calling the opening game. For showing the professional players of the world ‘How to Do it Right’, Aimee Barrett-Theron is 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Sarah Seiber is a Taekwondo Referee who is following in the footsteps of her Dad. When I am looking for posts to share I am always hunting for real life stories about real people who can give some inspiration and motivation to the sports officials, and anyone else, who might be following along. This article is about a young lady who is having fun, doing what she loves, with the people she loves. It is a ‘Family’ article and I smiled the whole way through so I put it on the list for the 3 Stars. For that, Sarah Seiber, Taekwondo Referee, is 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Alhambra Nievas is arguably the top sport officials in the world. She is certainly one of the top few referees of any sport, and currently the number one rugby referee on the planet, along with Rasta Rasivhenge. This post shows the type of leadership and friendship that the elite level rugby referees have for each other. In my opinion, it is the main reason that this group, strengthened even more with Aimee Barrett-Theron, is such a well respected team. Nievas is a key ingredient to the mix and the encouragement and positive spirit that she brings to the stadium helps everyone around her. Alhambra Nievas, Rugby Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 35.

3 Stars 2017 Week 34

  1. Joy Neville Rugby Referee
  2. Sarah Wilson FieldHockey Umpire
  3. Pete Morelli NFL Football Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 34 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

NFL Football Referee, Pete Morelli had a pretty weird call to make this week when the Broncos played the 49ers. There were 5 separate players who all got a penalty on the same play and Morelli had to stop himself from laughing out loud at the absurdity. I, on the other hand, have no constraints to laughing at the situation and had a pretty good chuckle. A good chuckle always makes it to the shortlist of stars of the week. 3rd Star, Pete Morelli, NFL Football Referee.

2nd Star

Sarah Wilson is a FieldHockey Umpire from Scotland. Wilson is one of the top umpires in the game today and has worked a number of top international matches including a very strong 2016 Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro. This week she has been awarded the European Hockey Federation Women’s Final between Belgium and the Netherlands, being held in Amsterdam. Sarah Wilson, FieldHockey Umpire, gets 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Joy Neville, Rugby Referee, has been awarded the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final being played in Belfast, Ireland. The match, between the New Zealand Black Ferns and the England Roses, is a huge achievement for the former player turned referee. With such a strong team of officials at the elite level of rugby, this assignment is not an easy one to come by. Joy Neville, Rugby Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 34.
