3 Stars 2017 Week 35

  1. Alhambra Nievas Rugby Referee
  2. Sarah Seiber Taekwondo Referee
  3. Aimee Barret-Theron Rugby Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 35 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

The 3rd Star this week goes to Aimee Barrett-Theron, Rugby Referee. A former star player, Barrett-Theron has taken her career as a referee to incredible heights in a short period of time. Elite level rugby referees are some of the very best sports officials in the world and the rise of Aimee Barrett-Theron to their ranks so quickly is something worth noticing. Here, she talks about her Women’s World Cup experience and the honour of calling the opening game. For showing the professional players of the world ‘How to Do it Right’, Aimee Barrett-Theron is 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Sarah Seiber is a Taekwondo Referee who is following in the footsteps of her Dad. When I am looking for posts to share I am always hunting for real life stories about real people who can give some inspiration and motivation to the sports officials, and anyone else, who might be following along. This article is about a young lady who is having fun, doing what she loves, with the people she loves. It is a ‘Family’ article and I smiled the whole way through so I put it on the list for the 3 Stars. For that, Sarah Seiber, Taekwondo Referee, is 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Alhambra Nievas is arguably the top sport officials in the world. She is certainly one of the top few referees of any sport, and currently the number one rugby referee on the planet, along with Rasta Rasivhenge. This post shows the type of leadership and friendship that the elite level rugby referees have for each other. In my opinion, it is the main reason that this group, strengthened even more with Aimee Barrett-Theron, is such a well respected team. Nievas is a key ingredient to the mix and the encouragement and positive spirit that she brings to the stadium helps everyone around her. Alhambra Nievas, Rugby Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 35.

3 Stars 2017 Week 32

  1. Randy Vogt Soccer Referee
  2. Esther Staubli Football Referee
  3. Rose LeBreche Rugby Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 32 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

Rose LeBreche is one of the top international Rugby Referees in the world. This week she took some time at the World Cup Qualifiers in Dublin, Ireland to speak with RugbyReferee.net. LeBreche talks about her Olympic experience in Rio, her fulltime career away from rugby and her life on one the most elite teams of sports officials in any sport. RugbyReferee.net is pretty much the ‘go to’ site for rugby referee information. They are thorough, current, and very knowledgeable, and this is a very interesting podcast. Rose LeBreche, Rugby Referee, is 3rd Star for the week.

You can listen to the podcast right here. Rose LeBreche comes on at the 10:00 minute mark. Enjoy!

2nd Star

Esther Staubli is a top FIFA Football Referee and has been in the middle for a number of top women’s matches around the world. This week she can add Women’s Euro 2017 Final to her list of career highlights. Netherlands beat Denmark in the final match by a score of 4-2 and Staubli and her team put in a solid performance. Esther Staubli, Football Referee, is 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Randy Vogt is a Soccer Referee from Eastern New York. He has been the referee in more than 10,000 matches at every level, from the pros to the 6 year olds. To put this into perspective, a professional soccer referee will often run 10 miles or more in a match, and an amateur referee can do 5 miles in a big game. Even if Vogt only ran 3 miles in each of his 10,000 games, that means he ran 30,000 miles as a Soccer Referee. That is a lot of miles, and in my books, running 30,000 miles, for any reason, is worth a 1st Star selection. Randy Vogt, Soccer Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 32.

3 Stars 2017 Week 30

  1. John Wright FieldHockey Umpire
  2. Roel van Eert FieldHockey Umpire
  3. George Sosnak Baseball Umpire

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 30 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

George Sosnak was a Baseball Umpire. He lived from 1922 to 1992 and has left an amazing legacy of Folk Art that is unlike anything else ever seen. In a fashion similar to baseball cards, Sosnak would draw pictures of players and their stats on baseballs. It is estimated that he drew on somewhere between 800 and 3000 baseballs and that many of his creations will never see the marketplace as they are proudly displayed in family collections of the players depicted. For sharing this amazing talent and the history of the game, George Sosnak, Baseball Umpire, is 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Roel van Eert is one of 2 retiring FieldHockey Umpires posted by 101 this week. After a 14 year international career that included 84 matches, van Eert worked his final game with Fanneke Alkemade who is one of the top female umpires in world today. Watch the FIH video as Roel shares some of his favourite highlights at World Cups and Olympic Games. Roel van Eert, FieldHockey Umpire, is the 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

John Wright is the other retiring FieldHockey Umpire for the week. After a 22 year career and over 200 matches, Wright has reached legendary status amongst his fellow umpires. The 5 Olympic Games and 4 World Cups he appeared in may have something to do with that. Wright was in the middle for the 2016 Olympic Gold Medal game in Rio de Janeiro, his second gold appearance. A true leader in the sport of fieldhockey, he will surely be missed by many. John Wright, FieldHockey Umpire, is the 1st Star for Week 30.

3 Stars 2017 Week 28

  1. Jan ter Harmsel Football Referee
  2. Randy Vogt Soccer Referee
  3. Hillary Lissenden Boxing Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 28 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

Hillary Lissenden is a Boxing Referee in England. She is also the Director of England Boxing, which is the National Governing Body for the sport in the country, and the CEO of London Community Boxing. Lissenden took a few moments to be interviewed by Rachel Bower of the Women’s Coaching Network and talk about her role as the senior female referee in the country. For leading the way into the future, Hillary Lissenden is 3rd Star this week.

2nd Star

Randy Vogt has been a Soccer Referee for 40 years. He was still in college when he reached his 1000th game. It has been a little while since those days and Vogt is quickly approaching match 10,000. That is an amazing feat in any sport, but it is even more amazing when it is all logged out and recorded for history. As the special game approaches, Vogt has decided to use the opportunity to try and raise some money for inner city kids. For the incredible persistence of a kind heart, Randy Vogt is 2nd Star.

1st Star

Jan ter Harmsel is well known to the followers of the Officials101 twitter feed. I have posted and reposted many of Jan’s excellent articles of advice and guidance that are not only helpful to the Football Referee, but helpful to officials in all sports. The Dutch Referee was quietly giving advice and inspiration in the background during the early days of 101 as I tried to learn the ropes of social media and figure out what to do with the unexpected attention received by the Officials101 page. Jan’s passion and natural teaching ability has been noticed by KNVB, also known as the Royal Dutch Football Association, which is the governing body for all level of soccer in the Netherlands, and they have hired him to be one of their instructors for their training programs. It is always fun to watch as 101 followers progress and advance in different ways, and I offer my congratulations to Jan for his successes of today and the future. Jan ter Harmsel is 1st Star for Week 28.

3 Stars 2017 Week 25

  1. Joe West MLB Baseball Umpire
  2. Kevin Collins NHL Hockey Linesman
  3. Referee DNA

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 25 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

This was a great post made by Key Match Incident on Twitter this week. It sums up some of the key qualities that make up the character, or DNA, of Referees and Umpires. If you are respectful, coachable, fit, compassionate, reliable, consistent, confident, and a whole lot more, you are wanted by sports associations around the world. The Referee DNA post gets 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Kevin Collins had a long and incredible career as an NHL Linesman. 28 years on the NHL ice, from 1977 to 2005, included trips to Stanley Cups, World Cups, All Star Games and Olympic Games. This week it was announced that Collins would be joining former NHL Referee, Bill Chadwick, in the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Scouting the Refs wrote another stellar article for us all about his career and the honour. Kevin Collins is 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Joe West is one of the most interesting characters in the world of sports officials. An MLB umpire, movie star, country singer, union boss and great story teller. One thing I notice about Joe West encounters posted by random people who attend baseball umpire schools and conferences, they all love the guy. This week West was home plate umpire for his 5,000th MLB Baseball game. An incredible feat, not likely to ever be achieved again, Joe is on his way to surpass the most prolific umpire of all time, Bill Klem, who umpired in 5,375 games. If his knees hold out, Joe should be able to pass Klem in the 2020 season. Not much doubt about this one – Joe West, MLB Baseball Umpire, is 1st Star for Week 25.
