3 Stars 2017 Week 17

  1. Anthony Taylor Football Referee
  2. Jerry Nash Soccer Referee
  3. White Cards for Peace

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 17 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

White Cards for Peace is a silent plea for calm in a world that needs sport more than ever. Sports bring us together as people. We share joy, excitement and awe at hard fought battles between our favourite teams. Our teams come from all walks of life and every corner of the globe. We don’t care about little things like social status, skin colour, religion or the neighbourhood our teams grow up in. We are just proud to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. In the middle of it all are the referees, umpires and all of the sports officials keeping the peace. White Cards for Peace from the International Table Tennis Federation is 3rd Star this week.

2nd Star

Jerry Nash is a 45 year old soccer referee from Iowa who just reacted to a situation without even thinking about it. Nash was reffing a game this week when a ball was kicked straight at him. With catlike reflexes he dropped to the ground by doing the splits out to the side, avoiding the ball completely, and then popped straight back up. All in the blink of an eye. This little video clip went viral and will be on highlight reels for years to come. Jerry Nash, Soccer Referee, for following his fitness regimen and stepping up the game, is 2nd Star.

1st Star

This week, Anthony Taylor was announced as the referee for the FA Cup Final to be played on May 27, 2017 between Chelsea and Arsenal. Being the referee for this game at Wembley Stadium has long been a dream for the 38 year old Taylor. The FA Cup Final is the pinnacle game for players, managers and referees in the English Premier League so for his ‘Dream Come True’ appointment, Anthony Taylor is 1st Star for Week 17.

 3 Stars Week 07

  1. Mark Clattenburg Football Referee
  2. Dickie Bird Cricket Umpire
  3. The Love Collection

3rd Star

It was Valentine’s Day on February 14th. A day to celebrate the love in our lives. I have spent most of the last couple of months updating and building pages at the website, and Valentine’s Day was the perfect day to introduce The Love Collection. With all the negative posts on the internet about sports officials, I thought it would be fun to create a page showing the love in the lives of referees and umpires. This page of weddings and proud mamas and papas gets 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Harold Dennis ‘Dickie’ Bird is a retired international cricket umpire from England. After many years as a player and coach, Bird had a long and colourful career as one of the most famous cricket umpires of all time, including 3 World Cup appearances. This week, the museum in his hometown of Barnsley, Yorkshire, is opening an exhibit to celebrate his achievements, and for that reason, Dickie Bird gets 2nd Star.

1st Star

After officiating in the 2016 FA Cup Final, the UEFA Champions League Final, the EURO 2016 Final and winning the Globe Soccer Awards Referee of the Year, there is little dispute that Mark Clattenburg is currently the top football referee in the world. After some speculation earlier in the week that he was going to leave the English Premier League and PGMOL to officiate for MLS Soccer in North America, the football world was shocked at the announcement that Clattenburg would become the Head of Referees for the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. For this career move, Mark Clattenburg gets 1st Star for this week.

3 Stars Week 6

  1. Carl Cheffers NFL Football Referee
  2. Howard Webb MLS VAR Boss
  3. Robonaut NASA Robot

3rd Star

Umpire and referee weddings were big this week. There were 3 weddings in one week. I think there were only 3 weddings in the past year. It was also the Super Bowl on Sunday, so this week has a couple of party favours. Party posts always catch my eye for the 3rd Star, whether they are wedding parties or tailgaters, but this week, I saw this little feature about the NASA Robot doing football signals before the Super Bowl. We hardly ever get posts with robots in them, so NASA gets the 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Howard Webb is one of the most recognizable referees in the world. He recently released his autobiography in a book called The Man in the Middle. I haven’t read the book myself, but by all reports, it is a great read. Last month Webb caused a stir when he visited the PRO offices, but no announcements were made at the time. However, this week, it was announced that Howard Webb was hired by PRO to oversee the implementation of the VAR, or Video Assistant Referee, for the 2017 MLS soccer season. For this, Howard Webb gets the 2nd Star.

1st Star

As I mentioned above, it was Super Bowl Sunday for NFL Football this past week. Super Bowl 51 was an incredible game with a record setting, Tom Brady led comeback, that required the first ever overtime period to win the game. The game was watched by millions. Every play was carefully scrutinized and the pressure on referee Carl Cheffers and his crew was enormous. For calling a great game, and being able to slip away hardly noticed by the masses, Carl Cheffers gets 1st Star.

3 Stars 2017 Week 3

  1. Carol Anne Chenard Soccer Referee
  2. Kitchen Drain Hockey
  3. Referee Cake Pops

3rd Star

This week’s 3rd Star post made by Ashley Lloyd includes her link to the Let’s Mingle website where there is a recipe to make these Referee Cake Pops out of Oreo cookies. This is the perfect time of year for party favours and flavours as sports fans get ready for Super Bowl Sunday. You can see the entire collection of Officials101 party posts and recipes on the page we call Celebrating Success.

2nd Star

The 2nd Star goes to the Kitchen Drain Hockey Referees. Phillip Kitchen and Steven Drain officiated in the January 13th game between Quinnipiac and Colgate in Hamden, Connecticut.  They make a great team. Quinnipiac won the game 4-1 and you can check out the box score the ECAC Hockey Website.

1st Star

Week 3 1st Star goes to Carol Anne Chenard who won the 2016 CONCACAF Female Referee of the Year. Chenard had another very successful year that included the gold medal game for Women’s Soccer at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. This Canada Soccer post, sharing the news of her win, was the post chosen to share news with the followers of Officials101. As one of the top officials in the world, the honour of this prestigious award was earned with hard work and well deserved by Chenard.

Stay tuned next week to see who, or what, is making the news in the world of sports officials. See you then! Jim

3 Stars Week 1

  1. Violet Palmer Basketball
  2. Sian Massey-Ellis Football
  3. Tim Peel Hockey

3rd Star

NHL Hockey Referee #20, Tim Peel was back on his home turf in St. Louis this week, wearing the stripes in front of 46,000 fans at the 2017 NHL Winter Classic outdoor game in Busch Stadium. The stadium is normally home to baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals in the summer months but was converted to a hockey rink for this years’ showcase NHL game between the St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks on January 02. As a Cardinal’s fan in the off-season, Peel was pretty excited to use the Umpire’s change room to prepare for the big night. St. Louis won the game 4-1.

2nd Star

Sian Massey-Ellis is a football referee in England. Based in Coventry, Massey-Ellis is a FIFA listed assistant referee who has worked Premier League and FA matches, including UEFA Euro and Champion’s League finals, and an impressive list of top women’s matches. Last week she was honoured with the Queen’s MBE Award for her services to the game of football. On and off the field, Sian Massey-Ellis is a leader and role model who inspires young women to participate in football, both as players and as referees.

1st Star

Violet Palmer is a 20 year veteran NBA Referee who is retiring from on court duties this season. This week she was honoured by the Los Angeles Lakers team for her incredible career. As the first NBA female referee, Palmer has opened the door for women to officiate in men’s professional sports everywhere. Her strength of character and skill on the court has earned her the title of the NBA First Lady and this week’s Officials101 First Star.

The 3 Stars feature was started on Twitter in January 2016. For 2017 the 3 Stars have been moved onto the website so we can share the details with you as well as the photos. Visit our 3 Stars archive to see which of your favourite referees and umpires made the news last year.

Stay tuned next week to see who, or what, is making the news in the world of sports officials. See you then!
