3 Stars 2017 Week 34

  1. Joy Neville Rugby Referee
  2. Sarah Wilson FieldHockey Umpire
  3. Pete Morelli NFL Football Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 34 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

NFL Football Referee, Pete Morelli had a pretty weird call to make this week when the Broncos played the 49ers. There were 5 separate players who all got a penalty on the same play and Morelli had to stop himself from laughing out loud at the absurdity. I, on the other hand, have no constraints to laughing at the situation and had a pretty good chuckle. A good chuckle always makes it to the shortlist of stars of the week. 3rd Star, Pete Morelli, NFL Football Referee.

2nd Star

Sarah Wilson is a FieldHockey Umpire from Scotland. Wilson is one of the top umpires in the game today and has worked a number of top international matches including a very strong 2016 Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro. This week she has been awarded the European Hockey Federation Women’s Final between Belgium and the Netherlands, being held in Amsterdam. Sarah Wilson, FieldHockey Umpire, gets 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

Joy Neville, Rugby Referee, has been awarded the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final being played in Belfast, Ireland. The match, between the New Zealand Black Ferns and the England Roses, is a huge achievement for the former player turned referee. With such a strong team of officials at the elite level of rugby, this assignment is not an easy one to come by. Joy Neville, Rugby Referee, is the 1st Star for Week 34.

3 Stars 2017 Week 30

  1. John Wright FieldHockey Umpire
  2. Roel van Eert FieldHockey Umpire
  3. George Sosnak Baseball Umpire

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 30 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

George Sosnak was a Baseball Umpire. He lived from 1922 to 1992 and has left an amazing legacy of Folk Art that is unlike anything else ever seen. In a fashion similar to baseball cards, Sosnak would draw pictures of players and their stats on baseballs. It is estimated that he drew on somewhere between 800 and 3000 baseballs and that many of his creations will never see the marketplace as they are proudly displayed in family collections of the players depicted. For sharing this amazing talent and the history of the game, George Sosnak, Baseball Umpire, is 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Roel van Eert is one of 2 retiring FieldHockey Umpires posted by 101 this week. After a 14 year international career that included 84 matches, van Eert worked his final game with Fanneke Alkemade who is one of the top female umpires in world today. Watch the FIH video as Roel shares some of his favourite highlights at World Cups and Olympic Games. Roel van Eert, FieldHockey Umpire, is the 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

John Wright is the other retiring FieldHockey Umpire for the week. After a 22 year career and over 200 matches, Wright has reached legendary status amongst his fellow umpires. The 5 Olympic Games and 4 World Cups he appeared in may have something to do with that. Wright was in the middle for the 2016 Olympic Gold Medal game in Rio de Janeiro, his second gold appearance. A true leader in the sport of fieldhockey, he will surely be missed by many. John Wright, FieldHockey Umpire, is the 1st Star for Week 30.

  3. Hockey Hack for Referees

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 15 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

There are times when sports officials are faced with little problems outside the standard whistleblowing and decision making. This post is a comical example of big league referees showing the rest of us how to get done. Because of the smile this post gave me, and the fact that I can’t stop watching the gif, this Hockey Hack for Referees is 3rd Star for this week.

2nd Star

This is a great interview with one of the best sports officials in the world, Field Hockey Umpire Michelle Joubert. She talks about her Olympics experience in Brazil last year, shares a bit about her fantastic career and talks about the young umpires of the future. Michelle Joubert is 2nd Star for Week 15.

1st Star

Baseball Umpire, Buddy Patnode has been calling balls and strikes on a broken leg this season. It is not just the players who play through injuries and situations as the season progresses. With all due respect – For showing his warrior mentality and his extreme level of commitment to The Game, Buddy Patnode is the 1st Star for 2017 Week 15.

2017 3 stars Week 09

  1. Anne Panther Basketball Referee
  2. Alan Baser Sailing Umpire
  3. Best Parking Spots

These are the 3 Stars selected for this week. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

This post extolling the benefits of becoming a referee made me laugh out loud. A little stoic cynicism is almost a job requirement for sports officials. This job perk of having a Reserved Parking spot is called ‘living the dream’ to most referees and umpires. In reward for the laugh, getting The Best Parking Spot gets 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Alan Baser is an Olympic class sailing umpire and judge who has been working hard to share his experiences with potential umpires of the future. As one of the #RefsofRio group, Officials101 has been following Baser’s career and for this latest success at raising the profile of sailing umpires and sharing his story, Alan Baser gets 2nd Star for Week 09.

1st Star

Anne Panther is the only female referee in EuroLeague Basketball. Making it to the top levels as an official in any sport is a challenge that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. For the women who are breaking down barriers in the male dominated sports world, Anne Panther is a leader, a beacon of hope for young girls who are fighting the good fight, and this week’s #1 Star.

Olympic Referees Share Referee of the Year Award

Olympic Referees Share Referee of the Year Award

Alhambra Nievas and Rasta Rasivhenge earn honour at 2016 World Rugby Awards

Spain’s Alhambra Nievas made history Nov. 13 when she won, along with Rasta Rasivhenge of South Africa, the Referee of the Year Award at the 2016 World Rugby Awards in London, the first woman to win the honour. “I’m so happy and I consider this a team achievement,” Alhambra told Officials101 after accepting the award.

Alhambra and Rasta were nominated for the prestigious award along with South Africa’s Jaco Peyper and Jérôme Garcès of France. Alhambra was also nominated for the award in 2015 alongside Jerome Garcès and Nigel Owens. Nigel Owens, who earned the honour last year, is considered by many to be the top referee in all of sports.

2016 World Rugby Awards NomineesThe elite ranks of rugby referees are a very close knit group. They are the best in their home countries and they take great pride in their selection to the international level.  The referees support, encourage and motivate each other and work very hard to be the best back home and abroad, making it a true honour to have one of their group recognized.

Alhambra and Rasta are friends (use the hashtag #refteam to follow along) and she is happy that two of their group can share the award. The pair were part of an elite team of international rugby referees that impressed the whole world at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, where the sport was played at the Olympic level for the first time since 1924. As one of the #RefsofRio, Alhambra was awarded the first ever Rugby Sevens women’s Olympic gold medal game while Rasta had the honour of officiating in the men’s gold medal match.

A friend’s encouragement to help out at a children’s rugby camp led to Alhambra taking up the whistle and she has certainly made her mark. She has refereed at a Women’s Rugby World Cup and in the Women’s Six Nations, and is a regular on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Series Sevens Series.

Alhambra thanks all the people who have supported her and those she has learned from over the years – first as a player and then as an official. “All of them are behind this award,” she said.

The latest accolade will give Alhambra even more motivation to conquer new horizons – like her upcoming appearance in the international men’s match between Tonga and USA and the 2017 World Cup in Ireland in 15s rugby.
