What are Parasports?
ParaSport is sport for people with a disability. It is “para”llel to sport for able-bodied athletes, with adapted equipment or rules to make the game fun and accessible for everyone. There are also some ParaSports that do not have an able-bodied equivalent.
Parasports run the gamut – from more traditional sports like wheelchair basketball, para-skiing and sledge hockey to para-specific sports like Goalball.
Twenty-eight parasports are part of the Winter or Summer Paralympic Games, giving them a special distinction of being a Paralympic sport. Paralympic sports began with a competition for wheelchair athletes at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England in 1948 organized by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann.
