The BBC had a very inspiring news feature about Caris Hedd Bowen this week. Bowen is a young mum who has beaten her cancer and has used the experience to grow and inspire others. She chose to become a rugby referee as a way to accomplish her goals and encourage others at the same time. For her drive, ambition and leadership, Caris Hedd Bowen, Rugby Referee, gets 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

It is March Madness time for NCAA Referees as the future stars of the game gather in Phoenix to determine which school becomes the reigning champions. Basketball referee, Jeffrey Anderson, is a veteran of many March Madness tournaments, and this year, with his hometown behind him, he has made it to the Final Four round. For this selection, Jeffrey Anderson is the 2nd Star. 


1st Star

Perry Barber is a Baseball Umpire who has been a champion for female umpires for a long time. What an amazing accomplishment for Barber who, after 32 years in behind the plate, was given the job of Umpire Manager and became responsible for an entire team of professional level female umpires. For her leadership and persistence, Perry Barber is the 1st Star for Week 13 in 2017.

Laurine Delforge, FieldHockey Umpire, has had an incredible year working all the big games and winning awards. This week is no different as Delforge gets a Golden Whistle Award in her native Belgium, and that is why Laurine Delforge gets the 2nd Star for the week.


1st Star

Steve Smoger is a legendary Boxing Referee who has had a very colourful career. For sitting down and giving us some of his story in this excellent podcast on the FightBox, Steve Smoger is the 1st Star for Week 12, 2017.

One of the many hats that Jennifer Huggins wears is that of boxing referee. Not only is she one of the top boxing referees in Canada, Huggins is a highly respected coach, entrepreneur and fundraiser for cancer research. This week she shared a bit of her personal story and some of her thoughts on coaching. For sharing her passion and wisdom, Jennifer Huggins is 3rd Star in Week 11.

Perry Barber is one of the top female baseball umpires in the world. This week Barber was out there making history again and forging another path for female umpires of the future. For leading the way and fighting the fight for over 30 years, Perry Barber is 2nd Star for the week.

1st Star

John Higgins is one of the top basketball referees in the world. When Higgins is calling NCAA games the Officials101 search feeds come alive in ways reserved for the biggest games. March Madness is the biggest and most important time of the season for college basketball in the United States. Careers are made and broken during this tournament and Higgins is often chosen to cover the critical games and it is great to see articles like this one that recognize his skill. John Higgins gets 1st Star of the week.

Veteran Boxing Referee, Jeffrey Hinds has been climbing into boxing rings for over 25 years. Last week there was a crisis and Hinds stepped up and stepped into the ring as the MC for the first time. All flash and style, there is a new road open for the future of Jeffrey Hinds, and for that, Hinds get 3rd Star for the week.

Chelsea Roffey is the first female to become a goal umpire in the Australian Football League. This week she took some time out to talk about her life as an umpire and share her challenges and triumphs while paving the road for future female umpires to participate in Australia biggest sport. For sharing and encouraging the umpires of the future, Chelsea Roffey get 2nd Star this week.

I prefer to choose people for the 1st Star position but sometimes we need to make adjustments. Wednesday was International Women’s Day and the 101 search feeds were loaded with great links shining the spotlight on female referees and umpires all over the world. It was a fascinating day filled with stories and recognition of the women who are charging forward and creating opportunities for young girls to play and officiate in all sports. There were too many posts that day to choose one single lady who stood out more than any others, so the 1st Star this week goes to the Female Referees and Umpires in all sports. Thank you for all you do!

This post extolling the benefits of becoming a referee made me laugh out loud. A little stoic cynicism is almost a job requirement for sports officials. This job perk of having a Reserved Parking spot is called ‘living the dream’ to most referees and umpires. In reward for the laugh, getting The Best Parking Spot gets 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Alan Baser is an Olympic class sailing umpire and judge who has been working hard to share his experiences with potential umpires of the future. As one of the #RefsofRio group, Officials101 has been following Baser’s career and for this latest success at raising the profile of sailing umpires and sharing his story, Alan Baser gets 2nd Star for Week 09.

Anne Panther is the only female referee in EuroLeague Basketball. Making it to the top levels as an official in any sport is a challenge that requires a lot of hard work and dedication.
