3 Stars 2017 Week 18

  1. Nigel Owens Rugby Referee
  2. Jennifer Huggins Boxing Referee
  3. Ball and Strike Counter for Umpires

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 18 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

I like to include a non-human element to the 3 Stars whenever I get the opportunity. The idea is to highlight an interesting topic that is relevant to Referees and Umpires. I admit that I often fudge the guidelines a little bit when there are cake or cookies involved because I want some, but this week, the post is of the non-edible variety. These college students are trying build a Ball and Strike Counter for Baseball and Softball Umpires. Many baseball fans are worried that Umpires will be replaced once these machines are perfected, which is just not so. The human umpires will still be there calling tips, fouls and plays at the plate. One day, ‘Robot Umpires’, as they are often called, will become just another Tech Tool for Sports Officials. Watch for this technology to improve quickly in the future. For now, The Ball and Strike Counter gets 3rd Star and starts the hashtag #bscounter.

2nd Star

Jennifer Huggins, Boxing Referee, makes another appearance in the 3 Stars by becoming the Top Boxing Official in Canada. Although Huggins is a real force outside the ring with her entrepreneurial spirit and charity work, it was nice to see here work inside the ring being recognized. This week. Jennifer Huggins is 2nd Star.

1st Star

Nigel Owens, Rugby Referee, is in a class of his own. In the World of Sports Officiating, Owens is probably the most highly respected referee on the planet, in any sport. His control of games is legendary and, for me, it comes as no surprise that he is appointed the Champion’s Cup Final. Nigel Owens is posted on Officials101 more than any other official and I doubt this will be his last appearance in the 3 Stars for 2017. Keep an eye open for that down the road. Today, Nigel Owens gets 1st Star.

3 Stars 2017 Week 17

  1. Anthony Taylor Football Referee
  2. Jerry Nash Soccer Referee
  3. White Cards for Peace

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 17 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

White Cards for Peace is a silent plea for calm in a world that needs sport more than ever. Sports bring us together as people. We share joy, excitement and awe at hard fought battles between our favourite teams. Our teams come from all walks of life and every corner of the globe. We don’t care about little things like social status, skin colour, religion or the neighbourhood our teams grow up in. We are just proud to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. In the middle of it all are the referees, umpires and all of the sports officials keeping the peace. White Cards for Peace from the International Table Tennis Federation is 3rd Star this week.

2nd Star

Jerry Nash is a 45 year old soccer referee from Iowa who just reacted to a situation without even thinking about it. Nash was reffing a game this week when a ball was kicked straight at him. With catlike reflexes he dropped to the ground by doing the splits out to the side, avoiding the ball completely, and then popped straight back up. All in the blink of an eye. This little video clip went viral and will be on highlight reels for years to come. Jerry Nash, Soccer Referee, for following his fitness regimen and stepping up the game, is 2nd Star.

1st Star

This week, Anthony Taylor was announced as the referee for the FA Cup Final to be played on May 27, 2017 between Chelsea and Arsenal. Being the referee for this game at Wembley Stadium has long been a dream for the 38 year old Taylor. The FA Cup Final is the pinnacle game for players, managers and referees in the English Premier League so for his ‘Dream Come True’ appointment, Anthony Taylor is 1st Star for Week 17.

3 Stars 2017 Week 16

  1. Craig Joubert Rugby Referee
  2. Jackie Robinson Day Baseball Umpires
  3. Brad Meier Beach Hockey Referee

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 16 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

The sport of hockey is fast, it is intense and it takes a lot of focus for referees to stay with the game. An NHL Playoff game is faster and even more intense than most, so when Brad Meier had to deal with this beach ball in the heat of the action the fans had a good laugh and gave him a cheer. So did I. For having the focus to think fast and stuff a beach ball under the back of his jersey during the play, Brad Meier gets 3rd Star for Week 16.

2nd Star

Jackie Robinson Day. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his professional baseball debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. When Robinson stepped onto the field that historic day he broke through a barrier of prejudice and ignorance and led the way for athletes of colour to play in the big leagues. To honour the strength and courage of this special man, Major League Baseball has retired his number 42 from the league, so no other player on any team, wears it ever again. Except on one day each year, April 15, when every player and every umpire wear the Number 42 as symbol to show that we are all the same. 2nd Star this week goes to Jackie Robinson Day.

1st Star

Craig Joubert has been one of the top international rugby referees for a number of years and officiated in many of the sports most crucial games. Since his appearance at the 2016 Olympic Games, Joubert has been attacking a new challenge as the Referee Talent Development Coach for World Rugby and his students are thrilled to have him. This is a great video of Joubert, or Joobs, as his charges call him, talking about his new job. Craig Joubert, Rugby Referee, is 1st Star for Week 16, 2017.

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 15 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. 3rd Star

There are times when sports officials are faced with little problems outside the standard whistleblowing and decision making. This post is a comical example of big league referees showing the rest of us how to get done. Because of the smile this post gave me, and the fact that I can’t stop watching the gif, this Hockey Hack for Referees is 3rd Star for this week.

2nd Star

This is a great interview with one of the best sports officials in the world, Field Hockey Umpire Michelle Joubert. She talks about her Olympics experience in Brazil last year, shares a bit about her fantastic career and talks about the young umpires of the future. Michelle Joubert is 2nd Star for Week 15.

1st Star

Baseball Umpire, Buddy Patnode has been calling balls and strikes on a broken leg this season. It is not just the players who play through injuries and situations as the season progresses. With all due respect – For showing his warrior mentality and his extreme level of commitment to The Game, Buddy Patnode is the 1st Star for 2017 Week 15.

3 Stars 2017 Week 14

  1. Bill Friday Hockey Referee
  2. Brayden Hudson Rugby Referee
  3. John Myers’ kids Wrestling

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 14 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

Kids! The center of the universe to so many of us. Wrestling Referee John Myers’ kids had a contest at school to make some Easter Eggs for the upcoming holiday, and they used their love and imagination to create a real winner. When your kids can play with their food and create a masterpiece that looks just like you, you get a spot on the 3 Stars. John Myers, his kids and all the love it takes to create a post like this, get 3rd Star for Week 14.

2nd Star

World Rugby is in Hong Kong this week hosting the HK7’s and posted this photo of young Rugby Referee, Brayden Hudson. I think it is fantastic when the big leagues work together with minor sports and encourage our future superstars to shine. Maybe it is just me, but I am pretty impressed with the stature and presence that this photo has with a referee so young. For leading the way into the future, Brayden Hudson is 2nd Star.

1st Star

Bill Friday is a former professional Hockey Referee who had a great career in both the NHL and WHL. In fact, Friday is the only referee who has ever worked a Stanley Cup game and an Avco Cup game. This week, Bill’s hometown of Hamilton Ontario honoured him by naming a local rink after him. When you get a rink named after you, you get a slot on the stars list so, Bill Friday Hockey Referee is the #1 Star in Week 14.
