Being a referee or an umpire on the international stage is a major goal of sports officials all over the world. Linus Ohlund is a Hockey Referee and he was wearing RefCam technology during the IIHF World Championships held last month in France and Germany. For sharing his experience and insights as an International Ice Hockey Referee, Linus Ohlund is 3rd Star this week.

2nd Star

Brian Chrupalo is a Canadian Football Referee who is participating in the Referee Development and Exchange Program created by the CFL and NFL Football Leagues. This is a fantastic article about growing up on the streets of Winnipeg and how the experience led to his appearance on the field with the biggest names in North American Football. Brian Chrupalo, Football Referee, is 2nd Star.

Jeff Copperthite is a Baseball Umpire. Jeff had an idea that his baseball umpire videos would look great on the Officials101 Baseball page, and he sent me a message to see what I thought. After some discussions we decided to work together and produce educational videos with Officials101 acting as the sponsor. This video is not only our first production together but it also the very first Officials101 sponsored educational content ever produced for the website. A sign of things to come in a very exciting future for sports officials at Officials101. 3rd Star

3rd Star was a tough one this week. There were a lot of candidates to choose from. Did you see all those licence plates? Those are almost impossible for me to pass on, but it had to be done. Ultimately, it came down to this – if you get a doll modelled after you, that is something a little more unusual and less likely to be repeated. Even if it isn’t a bobblehead.  Perry Barber, Baseball Umpire, gets 3rd Star.

2nd Star

This post was fun. The ball delivery at the 2017 Portuguese Cup was pretty unique as this guy flies in on a drone and hands the game ball to the referee. I think it is possible that this could be a sign of the future for referees in the growing game of Quidditch. For this week though, the Ball Delivery Drone Pilot is 2nd Star.

1st Star

One of the toughest matches on the planet to referee is the FA Cup Final. Of course that also makes it one of the most exciting career markers in the game as well. In 2017, Taylor got the call to run this high pressure affair as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1. Anthony Taylor is the 1st Star for Week 22.

3rd Star

No surprise here for long time followers of 101. I never met a chocolate cake I didn’t like. I have no idea what kind of cake this is. Maybe it is a squash cake. Whatever it is, when there is cake and sports officials together in an Officials101 post, there is a really good chance it is going to the 3 Stars. This week is no exception. The Squash Referee post gets 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Bob Joyce is a Baseball Umpire from Connecticut. He is also the play-by-play for the UConn Women’s Basketball. This is a great article. Joyce talks about the similarities between his 2 jobs and has some funny stories to tell about his journey. Bob Joyce is 2nd Star for the week.

1st Star

Not much doubt on this one. The Officials101 search feeds have been packed with posts about Eleni Glouftsis for the past couple of weeks. Glouftsis had the distinction of becoming of becoming the first female Field Umpire in a professional Australian Football League game. To put that in perspective for those of you outside the AFL game, that is the equivalent of a woman officiating in the NHL, MLB or Premier League Football. This is a pretty big thing. For this historic achievement, Elenis Glouftsis, AFL Umpire is 1st Star for Week 21, 2017.

Having fun is what sports are all about for me and almost everyone I know. In my normal day to day life, I also love looking for the unique little things that can make me smile and appreciate creative people. Put the two together, and my day is made. Occasionally, I come across a post like this that shows sports officials having fun with theme shirts and I like to share them with you in the hopes that the practice will grow. Stylin’ Umpires are the 3rd Star for this week.

2nd Star

Craig McCarty is working first base on Throwback Day. For all the same reasons you just read above, together with the fact that I am also a bit of a history buff, posts like this are irresistible for me. It is like my mouse has a mind of its own as the cursor moves to click the Share button. Fortunately, I am not alone. For being a good sport, keeping the masses happy and the past alive, Craig McCarty, Baseball Umpire, is 2nd Star.

1st Star

Jens Maae, Football Referee, was selected by UEFA to be in charge of the U17 Euro Final between England and Spain being played in Croatia this week. What a huge honour for the 35 year old Maae, who is from Denmark and has been an International FIFA Referee since 2013. For Week 20 of our 2017 3 Stars selections, Jens Maae is 1st Star.

Those who have been following Officials101 know that I love the history stuff. This post has a great story about cricket umpires who do a little superstitious ritual at a score of 111. The Legend of the Nelson is a fascinating tale of Cricket Umpires and Horatio Nelson that it is well worth the read and it gets 3rd Star for this week.

2nd Star

Jawahir Jewels is a football referee in England. This is an inspiring article about a young lady who has accepted every challenge and faced down every obstacle with determination and a wonderful positive spirit. There are some people that make an extraordinary difference in the world just by being themselves, and JJ is one of those. 2nd Star for Week 19 is Jawahir Jewels.

1st Star

The NFL announced that Al Riveron has been hired as Senior VP of Officiating to replace the vacating Dean Blandino. Admitting to the frantic pace required of the job during the Blandino era, the NFL basically split his old job into 3 and those appointments are also addressed in this announcement. Alberto Riveron will be the boss though, and he gets 1st Star for Week 19.
