3 Stars 2017 Wek 21

  1. Eleni Glouftsis AFL Umpire
  2. Bob Joyce Baseball Umpire
  3. Squash Referee Cake

These are the 3 Stars selected for Week 21 in 2017. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. They were selected from posts that were added somewhere on the Officials101 website in the last 7 days. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

No surprise here for long time followers of 101. I never met a chocolate cake I didn’t like. I have no idea what kind of cake this is. Maybe it is a squash cake. Whatever it is, when there is cake and sports officials together in an Officials101 post, there is a really good chance it is going to the 3 Stars. This week is no exception. The Squash Referee post gets 3rd Star.

2nd Star

Bob Joyce is a Baseball Umpire from Connecticut. He is also the play-by-play for the UConn Women’s Basketball. This is a great article. Joyce talks about the similarities between his 2 jobs and has some funny stories to tell about his journey. Bob Joyce is 2nd Star for the week.

1st Star

Not much doubt on this one. The Officials101 search feeds have been packed with posts about Eleni Glouftsis for the past couple of weeks. Glouftsis had the distinction of becoming of becoming the first female Field Umpire in a professional Australian Football League game. To put that in perspective for those of you outside the AFL game, that is the equivalent of a woman officiating in the NHL, MLB or Premier League Football. This is a pretty big thing. For this historic achievement, Elenis Glouftsis, AFL Umpire is 1st Star for Week 21, 2017.

3 Stars 2017 Week 10

  1. International Women’s Day

These are the 3 Stars selected for this week. Maybe you agree and maybe you don’t, but read on below to find out why they were chosen. Stay tuned next week to find out who are the most notable referees, umpires and sports officials in the world today.

3rd Star

Veteran Boxing Referee, Jeffrey Hinds has been climbing into boxing rings for over 25 years. Last week there was a crisis and Hinds stepped up and stepped into the ring as the MC for the first time. All flash and style, there is a new road open for the future of Jeffrey Hinds, and for that, Hinds get 3rd Star for the week.

2nd Star

Chelsea Roffey is the first female to become a goal umpire in the Australian Football League. This week she took some time out to talk about her life as an umpire and share her challenges and triumphs while paving the road for future female umpires to participate in Australia biggest sport. For sharing and encouraging the umpires of the future, Chelsea Roffey get 2nd Star this week.

1st Star

I prefer to choose people for the 1st Star position but sometimes we need to make adjustments. Wednesday was International Women’s Day and the 101 search feeds were loaded with great links shining the spotlight on female referees and umpires all over the world. It was a fascinating day filled with stories and recognition of the women who are charging forward and creating opportunities for young girls to play and officiate in all sports. There were too many posts that day to choose one single lady who stood out more than any others, so the 1st Star this week goes to the Female Referees and Umpires in all sports. Thank you for all you do!

The AFL has announced the appointment of Peter Schwab to the position of Director of Umpiring. Schwab will resign his current position as List Manager for the Brisbane Lions and return to the top umpire job he held for 2 years back in 1998 – 1999.

Peter Schwab AFL Director of Umpiring image 2Extensive AFL experience as coach, manager and administrator will assist Schwab in his new duties.  He first appeared on the AFL scene as a player with Hawthorn in 1980. After 11 seasons, 171 games and 38 goals his playing career was complete and his coaching and management career began.

Schwab will be replacing Luke Ball, who stepped into the position on a temporary basis for the AFL head office after the April 2016 departure of Wayne Campbell. Campbell left the job to take a senior management position with the GWS Giants club.

Peter Schwab is well respected throughout the league and his experience and leadership is expected by many to make him a great fit for the position. It will take a few days to take care of the departure details from his post in Brisbane and then Schwab will be settling into his new office.
